Salt

Mat 5:13

I read these words in my morning Bible reading, and it challenged me. Sure, I've read these words many times over my years of reading the Bible, but the second part of the verse is what challenged me.

Jesus had just started what probably is the greatest sermon ever preached. He gave His disciples the beattitudes, teaching them kingdom principles. Then he tells them they are the "salt of the earth." What did he mean by that. Salt, in that time, had many uses other than a flavoring only. It was a preservative, when fishermen (which several of the disciples were) they would coat the fish in salt to keep it from perishing before it could be brought to market. It was also used to help heal wounds. It was used for a variety of things. In this verse, Jesus was telling His disciples that they were the "salt of the earth." What He is essentially saying is that they were to add flavor to life, they would help to heal the wounds of the earth.

Mat 5:13

But salt that loses its saltiness is not good for anything. If salt can't preserve, can't heal wounds,  it becomes good for nothing. If the disciples didn't take the message of the cross, didn't do the things that Jesus told them to do, they become good for nothing as well. As Christians, if we don't do the things that Jesus taught us to do, we become good for nothing as well. Those, my friends, are harsh words, but salt that loses it's saltiness can't be re-salted to be made good again.

Friends, how is your saltiness. Are you adding "flavor" to your world, causing people to thirst after God? Think About It.
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
