GIGO

The other day on my Facebook status, I asked if anyone remembered what GIGO stood for. GIGO stands for Garbage In Garbage Out. GIGO is a computer term that means if you put the wrong figures into the computer, you'll get the wrong things as output. Many people, in the early days of computer technology, figured that whatever answers the computer gives must be right because it is the computer. What they often failed to realize is that the computer is only as smart as the person using it. If I put the wrong figures into a spreadsheet, then the output for the spreadsheet is going to be wrong as well. What does this have to do with our spiritual lives? Well, if we put garbage in to our lives, the output of our lives will be garbage as well. Let's look at some Scripture.

22 “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. 23 But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
-Matthew 6:22-23 (NLT)

Jesus is teaching us, here, that the eye is the light for your body. With our eyes, we can see good, and we can see bad. Our eyes are the doorway to our hearts and minds. "When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light." With our eyes, we not only see good things and bad things, but we can perceive them as well, we become aware of our surroundings. Oftentimes, how we become aware of things makes the difference between godliness and sin. Bad eyes lead the bad things. Good eyes lead to good things. Let me illustrate it this way: If we walk into a lighted room, we an see the layout of the room, placement of furniture and we can avoid things that cause us pain (like stubbing our toe on the bed frame when getting out of bed). Because our eyes can see what we need to avoid that will cause us pain, we can safely walk around the room. If we walk into a darkened room, we can't see the layout, the placement of furniture or the things that may cause us pain. We then feel around trying to find the light switch.

If we understand the good around us, that will radiate out of our lives, out of our heart and mind. But, if we linger on the bad, we become affected by the darkness, and evil will radiate from our lives, and corrupt us. This, I believe, is what Jesus meant in verse 23, "But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!"

I guess the question that needs asked is this: Is your eyes good or bad? Are you filled with light, or filled with darkness? Think About It.
