8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
-First John 4:8 (KJV)
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
- First Corinthians 13:8 (NIV)
Here's another example of Scripture linking Scripture.
John is teaching us about love in chapter 4. In fact, the phrase God is love or love is God is found 4 times in this chapter alone. Love is so vital, so important to the life of the Christian-yet it is often lacking in our lives. It is easy to say you love someone, it's another thing for you to act like you love someone. We read in First John 4:8 "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." If we don't love others, truly love them, then we really don't know God at all. Those are hard words to swallow. If we really love God, truly love Him, then His love will shine though our lives. His love will be evident in and through our lives. If His love doesn't shine through your life, then maybe you really don't know God at all. God is love. "8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." (Romans 5:8 NLT). God showed His great love for you and me when He provided Jesus to die for us-while we didn't even care about Him. That's right, Jesus died for your sins and mine before we ever thought about God and His will for our lives. He died for your sins and mine while we were sinners, living after ourselves. God didn't wait for us to "clean ourselves up" before providing Jesus. No, out of His love, He provided Jesus while we were deep in sin! If that isn't love, then I don't know what love is. Why, then, do we, as Christians, not show this type of love to those who are still living deep in sin? Why do we feel the need to judge, instead of love?
We read in First Corinthians 13:8 "8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. (NIV)" Paul is teaching us that love never fails. True love never fails. All things will one day pass away-but love never will.
Do you notice a common link between First John 4:8 and First Corinthians 13:8? Aside from the verse number? God is love-love never fails. That tells me that since God is love and love never fails, then God never fails. Isn't that awesome? God is love. Love never fails. Since God is love, and love never fails, then God never fails. Thanks, Dad, for pointing that out to me. Do you love God? Is His love shining through your life? If not, then maybe you really don't love God at all. Think About It.
