5This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
-First John 1:5-7 (KJV)
We talked yesterday about the importance of walking as Jesus walked, how we must keep His commands. Today, we need to look at where we are walking. Most of the time, when the Bible speaks of "light" it represents God, and "darkness" represents sin. Let's dig into this verse.
John says in verse 5, "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." John spends the first 4 verses of this letter explaining that the Messiah had come, and he witnessed the Messiah, and now is declaring what he learned from the Him, identifying the Messiah in verse 3, "That which we have seen and heard, declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ." The word fellowship means a close association of friends or equals sharing similar interests. So John is telling his readers that we can have a close association with with Him and the Father and the Son. We can have a close association with the Creator of all things. Think about that.
John teaches in verse 5 that "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." God is light. When the sun is shining, there is no need for artificial light, because we can see where we are going. But, when darkness falls, we must turn on the lights so that we can find our way. To put this in a Christian perspective, God is our light. When we are trying to find our way in life, we must look to Him, and He will light our way. The problem is, we try to live in the light of God, but follow our old life of sin. We can't do that. Look at verse 6, "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:" If we claim to have a close association with God, yet continue to walk in sin, we are liars and we don't know the truth. You can't walk in the light of God and the darkness of sin. When you go into a dark room and light a candle, darkness flees. Light and darkness can never coexist. As soon as you light something, even just a match, darkness flees. If we say we walk with God, then sin must not have place in our lives. Are you claiming the walk with God while you're walking in sin? If so, John teaches plainly that we are lying to ourselves.
We read in verse 7, "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." John teaches that if we walk in the light we will have a close association with God, and we will be cleansed from our sin by the blood of Jesus. Amen! The question remains, though. How are you walking today. Is your walk one built upon a lie, or do? Think About It.
