How To Pray

This week, we've been looking at the topc of ways that we show our relationship with Jesus. Jesus referred to it as our acts of righteousness. On Tuesday, we looked at how we should not pray. Since we have an understanding of how our prayers should not sound, we need to discover how Jesus expects us to pray. Today, I want to look at just 1 verse of Scripture. On Thursday, we will look at what is commonly called the Lord's Prayer.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you  (Matthew 6:6 NIV)"

If we are going to pray in the way Jesus teaches us, then we all got work to do. Look at what Jesus teaches us here.

Go into your room
I know many people who have what they call a "prayer closet." They actually clean out a closet and go in there to pray and seek God. I'm not suggesting you go to that extreme, but I do think we can learn something from that. I think what Jesus is meaning is that we find a place that we can communicate with God. Jesus spent time in gardens and other solitary places, so that He can have uninterrupted time with His Father. That is what we need to do. We need to find a place that we can get alone with God and seek Him. Pray and listen to what God wants us to do. The idea of a place we can get alone with God leads me to the next part of His instructions.

Close the door
By closing the door, we are showing that we want time alone with our Father. When someone closes a door, that generally means they don't want to be disturbed. We are closing out the distractions of life so that we can have that alone time with God. When we sit down to pray, we need to turn off our cell phones and pagers, unplug the phone and turn off the TV. That way there is nothing to interupt our prayer time.

Friends, prayer and communication with God is vital to our Christian life and Christian growth. Do you seek alone time with God? Think about it.
