And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. 4 If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. 5 But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. 6 Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.
-First John 2:3-6 (New Living Translation)
This week, I want to do a ministry wide study, where each blog post and Bible Study broadcast is focused on one series. The series? Walk As Jesus Walked. Our foundation verse is First John 2:6.
"Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did." Think of this as the measuring stick for your life. Does your life reflect the life Jesus lived?
John says, in verse 3, "And we can be sure that we know Him if we obey His commandments." This is a question many of us deal with-how do we know we are saved? John answers that here, in a simple way. The way to know if you're truly saved is this-do you obey the commandments of Jesus? He seems to echo what Jesus says in John 14:15 where He says, "If you love me, obey my commandments." We show our love for Jesus by obeying what He has told us to do. Verse 4 says, "If someone claims, 'I know God,' but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth." This is a bold statement. We can claim to be saved, we can claim to know God, but unless the way we live our lives prove it, then those are just empty claims. Understand what I mean? If we claim to be a follower of Jesus, but not live our lives according to His commands, then we are a liar. We prove that we are saved in the way we live our lives. If the way we live our lives doesn't match up to the claims we make, then we are not living in the truth of God's Word. He says in verse 5, " But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him." You can see, here, that it's through our obedience to God's Word that we show our love for Him.
If we claim that we live in God, then the way we live our life should reflect the presence of God in our lives. Does yours? Think About It.
