Proven Love

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
-First John 3:18 (King James Version)

I've been writing a lot about love recently. It's a challenging topic because there is so many definitions as to what true love is. What do you think love is, true love? Leave comments to this post and tell me what you think love is.

Anyway, John writes, "My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." John is telling us that it's not enough to love in word or speech. What does he mean? It's not enough for us to say we love someone. It's not enough to just talk about the love we have for others. Talk is cheap. What you talk is proven by how you act. John tells us not to love in word, neither in tongue. That's a cheap love, and one that has no foundation, no basis. It's the easy way out. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, if our love is based only on words, it means nothing.

How, then, should we love? "but in deed and in truth." Our actions prove our love. John gives an example of this in verse 17, "But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?" John is teaching us that if we have true love for others, and we see others in need, and we can do something to help meet that need, but don't, then we really don't have the love we claim to have.

Let me ask you this, is your love based only upon your words? Or is it proven in your deeds? Think About It.
