Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
-Matthew 24:45-51 (King James Version)
At first glance, these verses seem to be talking to the pastor, the teacher, those in church leadership. But, I think it goes deeper than that. All of us, not just the church pastor and teacher, has the responsibility to tell others about Jesus. Are you fulfilling that calling?
Jesus said, in verse 45, "Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?" Jesus is giving us a picture here. A slave was made ruler over a household while his master went on a journey. He was to provide food to the other slaves. Each and every one of us has that mission in life. We have the Bread of Life, we have the meat of the Word of God. We must share it with others. We share it when we tell others about Jesus. But, we also share the Bread of Life quietly, by the way we live our lives. We have been given a task, and we must be found doing that task. We must be sharing the Gospel with others, we must be giving them the meat of the Word of God.

Verses 46-51 provide for us what will happen to the servant who did what the master told him to do, and what will happen to the servant who did not do what he was told to do. Let's start with the latter. Verses 48-51 say, "But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." The servant doesn't really believe the master will return. How many people today believe the same thing about Jesus. We've got a sense of complacency, we think the return of Jesus will still be hundreds, if not thousands, of years from now. So, being we have so much time to complete the task, we feel we can be lazy, we feel we can put off what God has called us to do, let's blend in have fun. There is danger in that. Look what Jesus says in verse 50, "The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of." Jesus is coming back, Jesus is returning. It could be today, it could be tomorrow. Verse 51 says, "And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." The servant shall be condemned. It turns out that he wasn't a true servant of the master.
Verses 46-47 reveal what the outcome of the servant who did do what the master told him to do. "Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods." Plain and simple, the servant doing what he was told to do when his master returns is made ruler over all. What a promise, what a blessing. The true servant follows his masters commands. The true servant does what he's told to do, and then is rewarded. Are you doing what God has told you to do? Think About It.
