And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
-Second Samuel 11:2-5 (King James Version)
Sin always brings a downward spiral that seems out of control. For the rest of this week, we're going to look at three steps that the downward spiral takes. Step 1 is the sin. Step 2 is the cover up. Step 3 is the results. It doesn't matter what kind of sin it is, it covers these three steps.
In verse 1 of Second Samuel 11, we learn that it was springtime, the time when kings would go to war. David, however, decided that he was going to stay behind. Perhaps the nation that Israel was going to fight was going to be an easy battle. Anyway, David stayed behind, and saw a women bathing. David was consumed with lust for this woman. So much so, that verse 3 reveals to us that David "sent and enquired after the woman." He wanted to know who she was. He saw this woman and nothing was going to stop him from getting her. That is the point where the desire to sin took control of David. Verse 4 tells us that David fell into sin. "...and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her...and she returned to her house." The sin happened, he slept with the woman he lusted after.
Sin is defined as missing the mark or violating the law. In taking this woman, David committed adultery, breaking one of the commandments of God. Maybe David thought that, as king, and as a "man after God's own heart" he was above the law. The fact is, he wasn't. None of us are. Scripture teaches us that there is a pattern to sin, and I think we've seen this pattern in this story. The pattern to sin is found in James 1:14-15, "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."
Sin begins when we are "drawn away of his own lust, and enticed." It's when the object of sin, and the desire of sin, take over our thought pattern. We see this when David was waking around the roof of his palace and saw the woman bathing. He became consumed with her, and the lust to have her took over his mind. Lust births sin. It births falling into the sin. We see this when David lay with the woman. His lust burned until he had her. Finally, when you fall into sin, it brings death. A spiritual death, but also, in some cases, a physical death.
We've looked specifically at David's sin of adultery. But, the same pattern to sin is found through all sins. Whether the sin involves adultery, lying or whatever, sin always leads to death. Hopefully, through this look at sin, and the downward spiral of it, you'll be able to see the downward spiral start, before you get sucked into it. What sin is causing you to fall? Think About It.
