You Are Holy

 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Did you ever look up the meaning of the word "holy?" We've seen that word used in things like "Holy Spirit" and "Holy Bible." But, what does it mean? More specifically, what does it have to do with me? 

According to thefreedictionary.com, the word "holy" means, "specified or set apart for a religious purpose." The use of something labeled "holy" is for religious purposes. The word "Holy Bible" means that this book, the Bible, is set apart from all other books, is specified for the purpose of God. Did you know that you, if you're a Christian, are labeled as "holy?"

First Peter 1:16 says, "Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy." God is holy, God is set apart. Because of this, we, as His children, must be holy as well because we are set apart for His purpose. Want more proof? Verses 14-15 says, "As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;" Peter is teaching us that we must not continue chasing after the sins of our past. He says we must do this as obedient children. We show our obedience to the God when we follow the commands found in His Word. We show our disobedience to God when we continue chasing after the sins of our past, all the while proclaiming our faith and love for God. If we could continue living our life of sin, and still attain eternal life with God in Heaven, then why did Jesus come? The fact is we cannot. When we turn to God, that means we turn from sin. We must not continue chasing after, and living in, the sins of our past.
