I've been teaching through the book of First John on Talkin' Scripture, my weekly Internet radio show, as well as during my adult Sunday School class at church. This book, First John, talks alot about false teachers and what you and I have as Christians. First John 2:20 says this, "But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.(KJV)" This is an awesome little verse of Scripture. Let's explore it.
Starting in verse 15 of Chapter 2, John is teaching about antichrists, or false teachers who have gone out, claiming to be Christians, but actually are not. These false teachers were leading many astray, causing them to leave the church and their faith in the gospel of Jesus behind. And then John teaches them that they have an unction. What does that word mean? Unction simply means an annointing. In other words, true Christians have the Holy Spirit living in them, it is given to us at the moment of salvation. The Holy Spirit has various works,, which we'll discuss some other time. Among those works is to teach us and remind us of the words of God in Scripture (John 16:13). That is what John meant when he said we have an unction from the Holy One. We are annointed, and we should be able to tell the difference between a true believer and teacher of the Word, from a false teacher, someone who is looking to bring praise to themselves.
The rest of the verse (1 John 2:20) says that we know all things, as a result of the annointing of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it is hard for me to comprehend that through the Holy Spirit, I can know all the things I need to know to do what God has called me to do. You know what, you, if you are a born again Christian, can know all the things God has for you as well. Do you believe that. I think that is where the problem comes in. We say that we trust God for all things, but when push comes to shove, we put more trust in ourselves, or someone or something else other than God.
You have the annointing to know all things. That is what the Bible says. Do you live like you do? Think about it.
