Romans 6:6 says, "Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin."(KJV)
I need to ask a important question, one that is quite personal. Who are you serving today? Paul makes it clear, in this verse, that, for the born again Christian, our old self is crucified with Christ, so that we sin no more. Yet, so many of us still live like we are serving sin! Look deeper at what Paul is teaching. Our old man, that is our life before Christ. He is teaching that our life before Christ (I like to call it BC) has been crucified. It has been killed and done away with. Why? So that it may be destroyed. We can't serve God properly if we are still living in sin. God hates sin, and sin cannot be in His presence. So therefore, if we are going to come to God, our sins must be destroyed. We can't do it on our own, only through Jesus can this be done. That is why we must do away with our old life full of sin.
Again, I ask why? Why must our old life be done away with? Paul teaches that our old life must be done away with so that from now on, we don't serve sin. This is an all or nothing proposition. Either we serve Christ, and do what He's called us to do. Or, we serve sin, and fall victim to our own lusts and evil desires. You can't serve both sin and Jesus. It's one or the other. Who do you serve this day?
