You're blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God.
You're blessed when you follow his directions,
doing your best to find him.
That's right—you don't go off on your own;
you walk straight along the road he set.
You, God, prescribed the right way to live;
now you expect us to live it.
-Psalm 119:1-4 (The Message)
One of the things that I talk about often during the broadcasts is that we must follow the path that God has given us. That we must do what we're called to do. In this section of Psalm 119, we see that idea presented well.
Verse 1 says, "You're blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God." What's the word blessed mean? Among the definitions we find, "Bringing happiness, pleasure, or contentment."* We experience true happiness when we stay of the course that God has laid out for us. Are you truly happy today? Two parts of this verse jump out at me. "stay on course," and "walking steadily." If we are going to live the successful Christian life, we must stay on course. There are plenty of exit ramps and detours that will attempt to draw us off course, but we must stay stay on course. Also, if we're going to live the successful Christian life, we must walk steadily. We must not run ahead, we must not stop. We must walk steadily on the "road revealed by God."
Verse 2 says, "You're blessed when you follow his directions, doing your best to find him." There is that word blessed again. We experience true happiness & contentment when we follow his directions. Do you ever wonder why most burglaries happen at night. Because those who are committing burglaries are embarrassed by what they do, so the do it in the cover of darkness. For the Christian, if we are going to "stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God" we must "follow his directions, doing our best to find him." We must obey the Lord's leading, and we must find Him in all parts of our lives. God will reveal himself. The question is, are you looking for Him?
Verse 3 teaches, "That's right-you don't go on your own, you walk straight along the road he set." Are you being a lone ranger and blazing your own way through life. If so, you're missing out on the best of God and what He has for us. Verse 4 says, "You, God prescribed the right way to live, now you expect us to live it." God has revealed the right way to live: To stay on course, walk steadily on the road revealed by God, blessed when you follow his directions, when we don't go on your own. Is that what your desire is, to walk in the road revealed by God? Are you walking the course God wants you to walk on? Are you living the life God expects you to live? Think About It.
