27And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
28But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
29But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.
30And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.
31But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.
-Mark 14:27-31 (KJV)
I'm sure all of you has been let down by someone at sometime in your life. It's almost always a hurtful experience to put your trust into someone only to have them break that trust.
Jesus predicts the denial of Him by Peter. Jesus says in verse 27, "And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered." Jesus tells them that they will all fall away. This is a pretty strong statement here. These men had left all they had to follow Jesus. They traveled with Jesus, they saw the miracles that Jesus performed, they learned from Jesus, and now Jesus tells them that they will all fall away. Peter answers this statement in verse 29, "But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I." Pretty bold statement from Peter. These men spent the last few years with Jesus, and while they may not have always understood what Jesus was doing or teaching, Jesus tells them they will fall away. Peter declares that he will never fall away. Does that sound familiar? How many times have you or I stumbled and backslid from Jesus, only to repent and say "I will never fall away again!" Jesus answers that statement in verse 30, "And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice" Imagine how Peter must have felt at that moment. Embarrassed? Angry? Upset? Imagine having God in the flesh, when you give Him your undying love and support, tells you that you will disown Him. How would you feel? Do you want to know something? Whether you admit it or not, you deny Jesus each and every day of your life. I do it, you do it, and the person who sits next to you at church does it to. That is the fact of the matter. Tomorrow, we'll look at what happens to Peter. For today, though, think on this. How would your life be different if Jesus was on your Facebook friends list, or a twitter follower? Would you post the things you post? Would you comment the way you comment? Who would not be on your friends list if Jesus was there? Think About It.
