"But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.
-Mark 14:31 (KJV)
Yesterday, we studied about how the Disciples would all fall away. Peter told Jesus that he would never fall away, but Jesus revealed that Peter would deny Him three times. Let's pick up the story.
Look at Peter's reply to the words of Jesus. Verse 31 says, "But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all." There are two things here that I want to draw your attention to. First, Peter said that he would die with Jesus. He told Jesus that he would never disown Him. Peter was pledging to Jesus that whatever happens, Peter would have His back. What did Peter end up doing? He denied Jesus three times. We read about it in Luke 22:54-62. We see here that Peter disowned Jesus three times, just as was predicted. After Peter had disowned Jesus the third times, we read this in Luke 22:61, "And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice." Peter had denied Jesus, just as it was told to him, and Jesus turned and looked straight at him. What kind of expression do you think was on His face? One of joyful, "I told you so!" kind of looks? I doubt it. I believe it was one of deep hurt, sorrow or pain. Maybe even a tear streaming down the cheek of Jesus. You see, even though Jesus knew and predicted this denial by Peter, Peter still let Jesus down. Imagine having Jesus turn and look at you each and every time you denied Him or disowned Him.
Tomorrow, we will look at the second thing I want to bring out of Mark 14:31. For today, how have you denied Jesus? Repent of that sin, and ask Him how you can keep from disowning Jesus in your life. Think About It.
