Light or Darkness?

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
-First John 1:5-2:6 (KJV)

I wanted to post the verses we studied on this week's Talkin' Scripture broadcast. These verses have much to teach us about how we should be walking in our world. These verses also serve to warn us if we are not walking the way God called us.

First John 2:6 says, "He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked." What John is saying is that if we claim to love God and live for Him, then we should walk as Jesus walked. We should imitate Christ in our daily life. We should live in the same way as Jesus did? How can we do that? 2:3 says, "And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments." The way we can walk like Jesus is to keep the commandments that are found in the Bible. Jesus lived in complete obedience to the commandments of God. He kept them right up to His last breath. How could he do that? Because His mind was in tune with the mind of God. Because His mind was in tune with the mind of God, Jesus walked in the light (1:7) and had a right fellowship with God.

Here is the warnings. We can claim to walk (abide) with God, but if we're not, we are a liar. Look at 1:6, "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:" To walk in darkness is walking in sin, which is the exact opposite of how God expects us to walk. 2:4 says, "He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." When we fail to keep His commandments, we prove we really don't abide with Christ. You see, we can't claim to know Christ, to walk with Him, and  not keep His commands and continue to walk in sin.

Are you walking in the light of a right fellowship with God? Or are you walking in darkness, with claims that are false? Think About It.
