And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
-First Corinthians 2:1-5 (King James Version)
Many of us are familiar with Twitter, the microblogging site. To successfully use Twitter, you must follow other people, and other people must follow you. Even Facebook is getting in on the "follow" bandwagon, allowing you to follow people you don't even know. The "follow" campaign has even spilled into our churches, where people are following their pastor or teacher, and in many instances, they may be leaving God behind.
That, I believe, is what Paul was addressing here in First Corinthians 2. Look at how Paul describes how he came to this church at Corinth, "...not with excellency of speech or wisdom...not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ...with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling....my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words..." How many Pastors today would want this description of their ministry? But, it should be each of our desires. Why? Paul says, in verse 5, "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." My faith doesn't stand in the teaching of my Pastor, or of Pastors like David Jeremiah or Charles Stanley. My faith doesn't stand in my own preaching and teaching. My faith stands in the power of God that works through men like my Pastor, like David Jeremiah and Charles Stanley, and even through my own preaching and teaching.
I think Paul would agree with this statement: Don't follow me, but do follow God. What is your faith standing in? The wisdom of man, or the power of God? Think About It.
