5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
-Proverbs 3:5-7 (King James Version)
I love the Proverbs, as they are so filled with practical wisdom. However, some of them leave me saying, "Huh?" Not these verses, though.
Verse 5 says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." Too often, we try to depend on our own wisdom, our own understanding to make it through life. Instead, we should trust in the Lord for that wisdom and understanding. Paul writes in Romans 12:2 "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." We must have our thought train tuned to the Lord so that we can learn to trust in Him. We must train our mind to look at the big picture of life, and not focus on our small problem.
We must trust in the Lord. Verse 6 says, "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Once you have your mind tuned into the will of God for your life, make sure you acknowledge Him. Make sure you acknowledge that your wisdom and understanding comes from God, comes from the Lord. By knowing where your wisdom and knowledge comes from, it makes it easier not to depend on your understanding and wisdom. The writer says to acknowledge God in all your ways, and as a result, "he shall direct your paths." As you acknowledge the work of God in your life, you'll develop a greater trust, and that trust will help you as God directs the path of your life.
One final thing to note, and that is verse 7. "Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil." Don't be wise in your own eyes, don't look at yourself and trust in your own wisdom. Then, he says "fear the Lord, and depart from evil." Fear the Lord means a type of reverent fear. Remember when you were a young child and you got in trouble at school, and your mom found out. What did she do? "Wait till your father comes home!" and then send you to your room. Remember the feeling of fear that came over you as you heard the car pull into the driveway? That's the kind of fear we should have for God. Plus, we need to depart from evil. Our own wisdom and understanding will lead us to evil. No one has to train us how to sin, we must be trained how to live for God.
Are you allowing God to lead and direct your path? Think About It.
