10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
-John 1:10-13 (King James Version)
What we read here, I believe, is some of the saddest verses of Scripture. Why? Verses 10-11 says, "He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not." If you look at verse 11 in the New Living Translation, it reads, "He came to his own people, and even they rejected him." John is speaking about Jesus. In verses 1-5 we see where Jesus is with God, has always been with God, and is God. We see how Jesus was there during creation, and all we see, and all we are was created by Him.
Then, we get to verses 10-11. Jesus, the creator and builder of this world, came to His creation, and He was rejected. He's still rejected even today. People chase after all kinds of "created gods." Things we create to worship, things we serve, instead of the One who deserves it.
But, as sad as verses 10-11 are, verses 12-13 give us something to get excited and happy about. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, no of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." John is teaching us that those who did receive Jesus, those who didn't reject Him, became the sons of God.
So, what's it going to be? Are you going to reject Jesus and chase after false gods? Or are you going to receive Jesus and become a child of God? Think About It.
