Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
-John 4:34 (King James Version)
What is your number 1 desire in life? I mean your true, number 1 desire. As a worker in the Kingdom of God, I'd love it if everyone who reads this replies that doing the will of God is their number 1 desire. I know that will not happen. If you and I are honest with ourselves, we know that doing what God wants us to do isn't what our life's goal is. I hear so many preachers, teachers, musicians say things like "they are homesick" and how they can't wait to get to Heaven. Do they really? Or, is that what we expect to hear from preachers, teachers and musicians? What if someone stood behind the pulpit and said, "I'm happy right where I am."
In John 4, we read about the discussion between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. The disciples had left Jesus at a well while they went into town to purchase food. Upon returning to Jesus, the disciples were encouraging Jesus to eat. He needed strength for the work. He said, in verse 34, "My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." Meat is beneficial to our bodies. Meat contains protein, which helps build up our immune system. It contains vitamins and other nutrients which helps our body*. Jesus says that his meat is to do the will of him that sent me. He benefited from doing the will of God. Does this mean that Jesus didn't eat while He lived here. No, that is not the picture that He is painting here. Instead, what I believe is this: We feel full after a t-bone steak dinner. We feel full, but feel satisfied, we feel strengthened. That is how we need to feel when we do what God's called us to do. We feel full, we feel satisfied, our faith feels strengthened. We feel ready to tackle whatever comes our way.
Doing the will of God was number 1 priority for Jesus. Where does it fall for you? Think About It.
