Listening for God?

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
-Proverbs 4:20-27 (King James Version)

Proverbs 4 teaches much about wisdom. It teaches us to keep wisdom, and it teaches us about the path of the wicked. The writer of Proverbs 4 then ends with some practical ways to apply these words.

He says, in verse 20, "My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings." We get the picture of a father talking to his son, like God talking to you and me. He says, "attend to my words, incline thine ear unto my sayings." We must pay attention to the words of God, we must listen closely to what He says. If we pay attention, and listen, to what God teaches us, we'll be the people He desires. The problem is, we listen more to what the world says, to what society says, instead of listening to God. Then when we're "listening" to God, we're really not paying attention. We have too many other things clamoring for our attention. If you truly want to grow into the person that God desires you to be, then you must pay attention to His words, and you must listen to what He says. Anything less will not achieve the desired results.

Verse 22 teaches why it is so important to pay attention to and listen closely to what God says. "For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh." His words are life and health to you and me. His words teach us of our need for a Savior. His words teach us how we should live and conduct ourselves in this lost and hurting world. His words teach us how to grow into the people He wants. If we are not paying attention to and listening to what He says, how can we live the life He desires? We can't, and too many are trying to listen to God and listen to the world at the same time. How can you hear that still, small voice of God when there is so much noise from the world?

Friends, are you listening for that still, small voice of God? Are you paying attention to what He says, or are you just trying to get through your prayer so you can get back to other things? Think About It.
