Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God
-Hebrews 12:1-2 (King James Version)
This week, we've talked about living the Christian life. We talked about laying aside the things that weigh us down, we talked about running the race, and we talked about running with endurance and determination. I'd like to finish this study with, perhaps, the most crucial, the most important thing we must do.
Verse 2 says, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." If you and I are going to live the Christian life, then we must look to Jesus. Some translations say "fix our eyes on Jesus." We must keep looking to Him, following Him where He leads us. As we look to Him, we'll be able to lay aside the things that weighs us down. As we look to Him, we'll be able to get away from the tangle of sin. If we look to Him, we'll develop the endurance, determination and patience we need to live for Him. The key is looking to , or fixing, our eyes on Jesus.
Why? Because Jesus is the originator and finisher of our faith. Our faith is built upon Him, and our faith will reach completion when we stand before Him in Heaven. Our faith will be no more faith when He welcomes us to our eternal reward. The point I want you to understand is this: If you want to live the life that God has called you to, then you must look unto Jesus, you must keep your eyes fixed on Him. Without that, you will never run the race with endurance, you'll never be able to lay aside the things that weigh you down and you'll never escape from the tangle of sin. Think About It.
