All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
-Second Timothy 3:16-17 (New Living Translation)
Yesterday, we talked about following all the commands of God. We talked about how we can't pick and choose what we want to follow. We also talked about when we add to, or take away from the commands of God, we are basically telling God that His word, His commands are not good enough. Today, I want us to focus on understanding why we can't pick and choose what we want to follow, and what we don't want to follow.
We read in Second Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right." This verse lists several reasons why we, today, in the year 2014, want to pick and choose what we want to follow, and what we don't want to follow. But, before I write about that, take this verse into consideration. Second Timothy 4:3-4 says, "For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths." Part of the reason why people want to pick and choose what they follow is because they have rejected the truth, and want to chase after myths. Second Timothy 3:16 says, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and make us realize what is wrong in our lives." People today want to make up their own version of truth. We have evil desires and we want to twist and pervert the truth to fit into our own evil desires and lusts. The Word of God teaches us the truth, but many don't want it. They want to be able to say "Hey, I'm a Christian. I love God, I love Jesus, I love everybody," while living how they choose. We have rejected the truth, and have accepted carefully crafted myths and fables as the new truth.
Verse 16 goes on to say, "It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right." None of us likes to be corrected. When we're corrected it means we've done things wrong. The Word of God corrects us where we need correcting, so that we can do what is right. That is another reason why people have rejected the truth. We don't feel the need for correction. We've established our own version of the truth, so there is no need for correction. Our carefully crafted myths and fables have led us to believe in wrong things.
Friends, have you rejected the truth? Have you accepted the lies and fabrication of myths and fables as truth? Think About It.
