What is salvation? Reference.com defines salvation as, "the act of saving or protecting from harm, risk, loss, destruction, etc." Salvation is simply saving something from harm, risk, loss and destruction. Salvation is an essential concept to the Christian. Some things we will look at here are:
- What do we need saved or protected from?
Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; (KJV)" All of us has sinned. It's that sin that separates us from God. That is why God set up the laws as found in the Old Testament, and the sacrificial system where the blood of animals paid for the sins the people committed. You must realize that you have sinned. Each and every person walking the earth has sinned. And those sins have consequences. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV)" The wages, or payment, for those sins we've committed is death. I think it's more than just a physical death, but also a spiritual death. It means that you will be separated from God for all eternity. You'll be sent to a place called Hell. We can learn more about Hell in the Bible. I'm not going to give each and every reference, but rather I'm going to give you one single reference that tells what will happen at the end of time as we know it. We will all stand before God, and we will be separated. Those who have accepted Christ will be ushered into their reward. Those who have rejected Christ will be sent away to everlasting punishment. Look at Matthew 25:31-46. That everlasting punishment is what we are being saved from by accepting Jesus as Lord.
The wages for our sins is death, but the gift of God (salvation) is eternal life. And that eternal life is only available through Jesus. Tomorrow, we'll look at some other verses in Romans about salvation. In the mean time, study these verses and the ones listed in Matthew 25:31-46 so that you can understand what salvation is and why we need it.
