8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
-First John 1:8-10 (NLT)
Yesterday, we discussed that sin is a choice. We choose to sin when we submit ourselves to sin. But, when we choose to obey God, then we walk in His ways. John has some important things to say about sin. Let's explore.
Verse 8 says, "If we claim to have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth." If we are honest with ourselves, we know we are sinners. Yet, sometimes people don't want to admit that. After all, admitting you're a sinner is a big step. Look at what John says, "If we claim to have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth." If we claim to have no sin, then we are not living in the truth. The truth is, then, that we are sinners. Paul writes in Romans 3:23, " For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard." We are all sinners, and a failure to realize that means we are living a lie and fooling ourselves into thinking we have no need for a Savior. That is what sin does, it blinds us to the truth. Look at verse 10 of First John 1, "If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His word has no place in our hearts." If we claim to have no sin, or have never sinned, not only are we fooling ourselves and not living in truth, but we are also calling God a liar. Imagine that. Calling God, the Creator of this universe a liar. All because you don't want to admit that you are a lost sinner.
But, there is good news. Verse 9 says, "But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness." If you admit your a sinner, and confess those sins to Him, God will forgive you. Even if you've first called Him a liar. Do you have sin that you need forgiveness for? Sure, we all do. Are you ready to admit and confess? Or, do you want to live a lie and call God a liar? Think About It.
Thank you.
