24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
-Matthew 7:24-27 (KJV)
Yesterday, we looked at Psalm 18:2, "The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety." We are going to spend the next few days looking at God as our rock, fortress and Savior. Let's start with the rock.
If you were going to build a house, you would not just start putting up the walls and roof without a proper foundation, right? Of course not. Well the same principle is true in our life with God as well. We must have a proper foundation. Look at what Jesus said in Matthew 7:24-25, "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock." If we are going to build a strong foundation for our life in Christ, then we must, not only hear the words of Jesus, but do them. It's not enough to merely hear the words, we must put them into practice. Look what happens when we do that. "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock." When the storms of life come, and they will come, you will not be moved. Why? Because your life is founded upon God. Isn't that a great verse? David writes in Psalm 18:2 that the Lord is his rock, in whom I find protection. You'll find protection from the storms of life, only when your foundation is built upon Jesus.
Paul writes in First Corinthians 3:11, "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ." Friends, to have a right relationship with the Lord, your foundation must be laid in Jesus. No other foundation exists, and no other foundation is available. What's your foundation?
