What Are You Working For?

27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
-John 6:27, 35 (NIV)

Many Americans live paycheck to paycheck, having just enough for each weeks needs. Jesus tells us in John 6:27, "Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval." Jesus is telling us not to work for things that spoil. It's kind of like what He said in Matthew 6:25-27, "25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" Just like the Father takes care of the birds of the air, He will take care of you as well. I've heard many stories of people who had nothing, no food, no drink, and God placed their needs on someones heart. It's because the other person heard the voice of God, and responded to it, and helped meet the needs of others. Does that mean we should just sit back and wait for God to meet our needs? I don't think that's what Jesus meant.

What things are you working for today? Are you working for things for yourself? Those things will spoil. Or, are you working on things to "store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven? (Matthew 6:20 NIV) Think About It.
