Your Words Are Important

34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
-Matthew 12:34-37 (KJV)

34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. 35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. 36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.
-Matthew 12:34-37 (NLT)

Yesterday, we discovered that we speak based upon what's in our hearts. Verse 35 says, "A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things." So, your speech is a reflection of what's in your heart. Your speech proves your faith, or lack thereof. You see, it's easy for us to put on a facade, a false front, to make others thing that we are right with God. But, our speech will always reveal our true identity. You can only keep up a facade for so long.

Verses 36-37 give to us a warning, and one we should take seriously. "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." Jesus is teaching us one of the most important principles that we need to understand and follow. Every word that will, and has ever, come out of our mouth, we will be accountable for. You know, those words you said under your breath about someone or something? Or maybe those "little white lies" you told someone. All of them. Then Jesus makes a remarkable statement in verse 37, "For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." The only words you can utter that will make you right before God (justified) is what Paul wrote in Romans 10:9-10, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." With our mouths, with our speech, we either accept Jesus, or we deny Him. Have your words made you right with God, or have they condemned you? Think About It.
