Even though we are speaking this way, dear friends, in your case we are confident of the better things connected with salvation. 10 For God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you showed for His name when you served the saints—and you continue to serve them. 11 Now we want each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the final realization of your hope, 12 so that you won’t become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance.
-Hebrews 6:9-12 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
In this part of the book of Hebrews, the writer is talking about falling away from the faith we have. He challenges us to stay true, to continue in the faith. He also provides warnings against falling away. For today, though, I want us to focus on the topic of laziness. Are we, are you, am I, lazy?
He says, in verse 10, "For God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you showed for His name when you served the saints-and you continue to serve them." Many people only want to serve God in front of others. They only want to do what can be seen by others. What about the person who faithfully cleans the church? What about the person who does other "behind the scenes" things that no one else wants to do. You know what? They are serving others as well. Preaching, leading worship, singing in the choir, running the sound system, all those are vital to worship, but so is the person who cleans the toilets. This verse teaches us that God will not forget what you've done for Him-even if it's cleaning the toilets. Then, we read in verses 11-12, "Now we want each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the final realization of your hope, so that you won't become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance." The writer of Hebrews is challenging us to remain diligent, and not become lazy. Diligence is a must, we must continue faithfully doing what God's called us to do. Otherwise, we'll become lazy.
We must be diligent in doing what God has called us to do. Are you? Think About It.
